Few challenges are as daunting or rewarding as improving the correctional system.

It’s a challenge Hustle 2.0 was poised to take on as they sought to expand their groundbreaking work in incarceration rehabilitation across the United States.

When the organization received a significant grant from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), part of the deal required them to find a fiscal sponsor to facilitate the project.

About Hustle 2.0

Hustle 2.0 is committed to its mission: "To maximize the potential of people affected by incarceration."

They tackle this through evidence-based, trauma-informed programs designed to reduce crime, violence, and recidivism, with a vision to turn correctional facilities into environments where healing and hope prevail over pain and punishment.

By creating the most comprehensive and effective rehabilitation curriculum in the correctional industry, Hustle 2.0 aims for all incarcerated individuals to have the opportunity to change their lives for the better.

Why Mission Edge?

In this situation, the need for a Model C Fiscal Sponsorship arrangement was clear.

This arrangement allowed Hustle 2.0 to raise money under our structure and stewardship.

We then re-granted the money back to Hustle 2.0 so they could provide their programs to incarcerated individuals free of charge.

Our partnership with Hustle 2.0 has been instrumental in several key areas:

  • Grant Facilitation: Our fiscal sponsorship unlocked access to nearly $300k in CDCR grant funding, essential for the expansion of Hustle 2.0’s mission.

  • Donor Engagement: We established a structure for individuals to contribute to the Hustle 2.0 scholarship fund, fostering a broader community of support.

  • Leadership Transition Support: During a pivotal change in leadership within Hustle 2.0, we maintained a steadfast partnership, demonstrating our commitment not just to individuals but to the mission itself.

The Results

Our collaboration has led to nearly $400k raised for the organization, enhancing the scope of Hustle 2.0’s programs.

Another indicator of success from this partnership is that Hustle 2.0 can now focus on their core mission without the added burden of nonprofit compliance.

The Outcomes

The impact of our fiscal sponsorship extends far beyond financial metrics. These are the metrics we care about the most.

Here’s how Hustle 2.0 was able to help more incarcerated individuals after partnering with us:

  • Scholarship Distribution: Over 5,500 scholarships have been issued across 47 states, directly impacting the lives of incarcerated individuals.

  • Program Recognition: A staggering 87% of program graduates have lauded Hustle 2.0 as the best rehabilitation program they experienced during incarceration.

looking ahead

Our partnership is set to support Hustle 2.0 in applying for additional CDCR funding, potentially impacting thousands more. As we look ahead, our efforts will focus on the development and implementation of new programs, ensuring that Hustle 2.0's work reaches every corner of the correctional system.
