Mary Pacio walked into the locker room as her basketball coach slammed his clip board against a bench.

“Why don’t you listen?” he yelled, and left the room.

One by one, her teammates walked up and started to write on the whiteboard.

“Because you don’t listen to us,” one teammate wrote.

Because of the feelings Mary and her teammates had, she decided to create a basketball program with a more optimistic and meaningful culture than the one she experienced that day.

She started Court Vision Academy, which gives athletes a positive, enjoyable, and competitive environment for youth basketball players in San Diego, while training them on the fundamentals of the sport.

With a team made up of two other coaches, Court Vision Academy’s goal is to help athletes become great people both on and off the court. While she realized there was a market for what Court Vision provided, they struggled to understand their numbers, create boundaries for a healthy work-life balance, and understand their roles in the company. Mary also didn’t understand how to pay herself and earn a liveable wage, causing even more stress.

In order to address some of those challenges, Mission Edge paired Mary with its fractional CFO Carolynn Duncan to help her create a three-year financial plan and guide her through personal and business dilemmas. She was also able to work with Mary on establishing boundaries to preserve the longevity of her business and her own wellbeing.

As a result, she is able to more effectively communicate with her staff, earn a living wage, and continue growing her basketball program. She’s also gained more confidence in herself as a leader.

“The staff at Mission Edge could not possibly care more than they do,” Mary said. “They do their jobs passionately and whole-heartedly. They’re just as invested in my business as I am and I could definitely feel it!”

Mary added that our fractional CFO service helped her “become more accountable with numbers, realistic with money, and be more confident as a business owner and person.”
