How Seed the Future Is Helping One Client Scale through Popsicle Sales

Seed the Future, a Mission Edge program, helps small business owners of color gain access to capital. Here’s one example of what we’re working on.

Many small business owners, particularly those of color, get stuck because they have trouble accessing the resources they need to grow and scale. Traditional bank loans can be risky for early-stage business owners, and they come with restrictions that lead to their own headaches and obstacles. Our Seed the Future program breaks those barriers, making it easier for small business owners of color to access capital.

The program combines our track record of consulting success with the market need for unrestricted capital: a solution that will actually maximize a business’ impact. And we’ve onboarded nine clients since April!

One project we’re really excited about is a collaboration with The Write Juice, a food truck business that makes organic, healthy, on-the-go beverages and snacks accessible to underserved communities.

Founder Joshlyn Turner came to us earlier this year wanting help generating more revenue, and we came up with an interesting strategy to scale her business: Popsicle sales.

Our CFO, Carolynn Duncan, began meeting regularly with Joshlyn both in-person and via zoom to brainstorm how she could scale. There were many different ideas tossed around, like attending more events or purchasing another food truck.

But there was one idea that really excited Joshlyn: revitalizing a healthy popsicle concept she originally test-launched a few years ago!

In a three-month period in 2020, The Write Juice made a test batch of healthy, fresh popsicles, and quickly sold out. Several customers even requested the popsicles at private events and parties!

Our team decided to work towards scaling The Write Juice through popsicle sales, because they can be sold wholesale and can also be transported easily. Most importantly, the popsicles carry forth The Write Juice’s mission of delivering healthy fruits and veggies to underserved communities.

We’re currently working with Joshlyn to start production of their popsicles locally in a commercial space, with the goal of building relationships with food manufacturers, as the demand for the product grows in wholesale markets.

Joshlyn will re-launch her popsicles today!

By expanding her menu, The Write Juice will generate more revenue. Who knew selling healthy popsicles would lead to a healthier business?

We gave Joshlyn the tools she needed to pivot and scale her business, and reignite her own enthusiasm for her food truck service.
