About Anastasiia and Tom

Where do you live?

Anastasiia: I live in Brooklyn, New York.

Tom: Annapolis, MD

What interests you most about small business finance?

Anastasiia: Small businesses often have a working business model, but due to the limited resources and access to financial, marketing, or other professional expertise, they have many inefficiencies that are usually easy to fix with appropriate training and resources. Finance is a way to see these inefficiencies and offer the path to sustainable growth.

Tom: Many small business owners, particularly those who are just starting out, often feel intimidated by the financial aspect of their ventures. However, guiding them through the intricacies of small business finance and transforming their apprehension into confidence is incredibly rewarding. There's a profound sense of empowerment in helping others gain the financial acumen needed to pursue their dreams successfully. This aspect of small business finance is what I find most fulfilling - the ability to empower entrepreneurs to turn their visions into reality confidently.

Describe your background in finance.

Anastasiia: I spent most of my career in finance in different roles, from financial reporting to private equity. I also had an opportunity to work with companies of different sizes, from startups to public companies in various industries. That helped me to learn the best practices and understand which of these tools are relevant to apply at different stages in a company’s growth.

Tom: With more than two decades of experience in the finance sector, my career spans a diverse range of roles, from large government contractors to dynamic startups. I've delved into venture capital and dedicated a significant portion of my career to assisting companies during pivotal moments—whether they're navigating through periods of swift expansion or facing challenges that require strategic intervention to recover and thrive.

Talk about your passion for entrepreneurship.

Anastasiia: My dad was an entrepreneur. Seeing his work instigated my initial interest in entrepreneurship. I ended up starting my first company while in college - insurance claims resolution services, which didn’t work. Still, it made me realize that I have to learn a lot about business and made me take a long break before I got into entrepreneurship again. I dedicated the next 8 years to building my career in finance before getting back to working as an early employee and senior executive at a B2B health technology startup and eventually starting my own company – a fertility platform called Blooming Eve, that helps to improve access to fertility care.

Tom: I'm not sure where my passion for it came from. It's as if it was always a part of who I am. From a young age, whenever I was asked about my future aspirations, my response was unwavering: I aimed to own a business. This resolve only deepened with time, evolving into a concentrated effort to align my entrepreneurial ambitions with companies driven by a social mission. The goal became not just to generate profit, but to simultaneously contribute to making the world a better place. What sparks joy for you outside of work?

Anastasiia: My recent obsession is running; I ran the New York City Marathon last year and set my personal record for a half marathon this year. I love yoga and meditation and try to balance it with my running routine. And food, of course - I am a big foodie. My husband and I love exploring new places and trying new restaurants.

Tom: Outside of my professional life, my greatest source of happiness is my family. I'm fortunate to share my life with an incredible spouse, and together, we've raised two remarkable children who are now navigating their college years. One excels as a lacrosse player while the other thrives in the world of music production. Witnessing their journey into adulthood and seeing them embrace their unique paths has been the most joyful aspect of my life. At the end of each workday, nothing brings me more pleasure than spending quality time with my wife.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

Anastasiia: You are more important than your business. It may sound controversial, but I found it very powerful and grounding. The best thing you can do for your business is to take care of your mental and physical health.

Tom: Instead of focusing on sales, let your passion be your guide. Presumably, you launched your business out of love or conviction for what you do. Share that enthusiasm with others. People are drawn to causes and individuals they can believe in and admire. Narrate your journey, maintain authenticity, and you'll discover that this approach not only resonates more deeply but also proves to be more profitable than any promotional offer or discount could ever be.
