More Than Just Admin Support for This Social Justice Organization

PG ChangeMakers sought a fiscal sponsor who could take on administrative tasks, offer guidance, and aligned with their values. Here’s why we were the right choice for them.

The phrases “police brutality”, “housing discrimination,” and “economic injustices” are innately complicated – but PG ChangeMakers has a way of making the solutions to these injustices remarkably simple: by elevating the voices of the marginalized.

PG ChangeMakers was formed when the founders noticed that their community’s issues-based campaigns were not being run by the people most impacted by the issues. PG ChangeMakers was created to ensure that the people closest to the issues become the ones at the forefront of the solutions.

They work on issues around police brutality, poverty, housing discrimination, food insecurity, and economic injustices, creating space for impacted people to speak their truth and assist them in building a platform to amplify their voices as well as seek practical solutions for injustices imposed upon them.

When PG ChangeMakers approached us in, they were in search of a partnership that offered more than just administrative support; they needed a collaborator who could also be deeply invested in their operational and financial success, and get excited about supporting their mission.

That’s where our Fiscal Sponsorship programming came in.

Overcoming Challenges

The path to making a tangible impact is often riddled with challenges, and PG ChangeMakers' journey was no exception.

From the complexities of fluctuating funding sources to the intricacies of transitioning team members from independent contractors to full-time employees, the organization faced hurdles that required a nuanced understanding of nonprofit operations and financial management.

PG ChangeMakers also required a fiscal sponsor comfortable with an organization working on the edge of advocacy pushing for social change – which is why Mission Edge was the perfect fit for them. (We say all the time here that “change happens at the end of progress.”)

Mission Edge's Intervention

Our collaboration with PG ChangeMakers was tailored to navigate these challenges seamlessly:

  • We provided clarity and structure around employment classifications, extending beyond California to out-of-state employees.

  • Working closely with Parker, PG ChangeMakers' leader, we delved into the intricacies of financial management, offering guidance, and at times, necessary pushback to ensure resources were utilized effectively.

  • PG ChangeMakers was considering accepting a bus as a donation. We helped them understand that the risks/costs of owning their own bus would outweigh the money saved on renting buses for field trips.

The Results of our Collaboration

Before working with us, PG ChangeMakers didn’t have the resources or capacity to take on the administration side of running a nonprofit or charitable mission. Now, PG ChangeMakers has the stability they need to make informed decisions. Regular financial reporting and strategic discussions have empowered PG ChangeMakers to steer their projects with more confidence and clarity.

Outcomes That Matter: Beyond the Metrics

The true measure of our partnership's success lies in the outcomes that resonate within the community, and for PG ChangeMakers, there are many things to celebrate.

  1. PG ChangeMakers has helped usher in a Guaranteed Basic Income program in Prince George County.

  2. The organization has fought for nutritious food in a “Jail through the Food Should Heal Not Harm” coalition, in partnership with the Food Equity Council.

  3. They have fought for renters rights and fair housing alongside the Prince George’s County Housing Justice Coalition.

  4. PG ChangeMakers have empowered seniors through the Senior 365 program by leading field trips and learning opportunities with a focus on both physical and mental health.

  5. The organization is spearheading an initiative to increase the representation of Black girls in youth sports by removing barriers to entry.
